COURSE INFORMATION
1. A two-year structured Clinical MD in General Internal
Medicine commenced on 15 May 2008 for doctors wishing to
enrol with the University of Buckingham (with modules in different UK
hospitals) and leads to the award of MD in General Internal Medicine.
It is our expectation
that doctors who apply for the 2 year Clinical MD programme will have
at least 1 year of post-internship experience.
2. Three-year structured Clinical MD in General Internal Medicine leading to the
award of MD in General Internal Medicine.
The 3 year MD programme
is expected to attract newly qualified doctors who have just completed
the 1 year compulsory internship.
3. A combined Research cum Clinical MD programme with the first year in Medical
Research based at the renowned Clore Laboratory at the University of
Buckingham and leading to the award of MSc in Medical Research.
This is followed by 2 year Clinical MD leading to the award of MD
in General Internal Medicine.
This 1 yr. MSc + 2 year
Clinical MD programme is geared for doctors who want formal research
experience in additional to clinical training in General Internal
Medicine. Candidates at any stage in their medical career are welcome to apply for this.
All three
above-mentioned MD programmes are currently enrolling candidates.
However, the earliest available start date might be different for
different MD programmes as some are very heavily over subscribed. The
University of Buckingham is currently in the process of creating more
MD places on all its programmes by increasing the number of
participating hospitals. It is therefore likely that more
candidates will be able to start their MD placements earlier than what
may currently be on offer. It is our recommendation that the
candidates should apply for the MD programme of their choice and get
enrolled for the first available place. If additional places then
become available, we will offer such candidates the choice of starting
earlier.
There is no formal closing date for applying for any entry point on any
of the MD programmes. Places are allocated on a first come, first
served basis. Please note, however, that these places are greatly
in demand and it is advisable to apply as early as possible. In
addition, for overseas candidates, the visa process can sometimes take
several months. Therefore, we recommend that you apply as early
as you can.
For the opportunity to speak to a current student on the MD programme please email Chris Ward.
University
of Buckingham School of Medicine is a GMC approved sponsor for full
registration with the GMC. The university will start sponsoring
selected candidates on the MD programmes for full registration in the
near future. Such candidates will be granted full registration by
the GMC at the end of first 3 months of their MD programme.
Having full GMC registration during the MD training will enhance
the clinical experience for these candidates during their MD training.
Providing the candidate's performance during the MD training
remains satisfactory, the GMC full registration will be valid
permanantly even after the completion of the MD programme.
All MD programmes are fully quality assured and are on par with an
MD from any other UK
university. As with other university degrees, international recognition will be
on a country-by-country basis and as per local regulations. In India,
the MD
programmes are expected to carry full recognition with the Medical
Council of India.
Approval from the General Medical Council or Royal College of
Physicians is not
needed for such courses. Candidates who are not eligible for GMC
registration by sponsorship will be given every encouragement to
sit the PLAB test and all candidates will be encouraged to sit
MRCP(UK), should they so desire.
The module structure and location of clinical campuses
may be subject to change in order to enhance the delivery of the course.
