Selection Information

SELECTION PROCESS

Registration with the General Medical Council is not a pre-requisite for the University of Buckingham MD programmes.  The MD programmes are not junior doctor training posts.

On an ongoing basis, recruitment is sought for a small number of doctors wishing to apply for the University of Buckingham MD programmes.

For all candidates, the selection process is strictly by merit and by application only.  There are no written tests.

Please note that all applicants for our MD programmes must have obtained their basic medical degree (MBBS) from a medical school that is listed on the Avicenna Directory (formally the WHO directory of medical schools).  It is the candidate's responsibility to confirm this in writing when applying for the first time.  If in doubt, please clarify before proceeding.

The candidates may apply in the following way:

Apply online, or
1) Download the application form from www.buckingham.ac.uk
2) Complete the application form.
3) Scan and send electronically to
Prof. R. Mathur at rajat.mathur@buckingham.ac.uk.

Once received, the completed application form will be allocated a unique applicant number and will be acknowledeged by the admissions office staff as well as by the university admissions tutor.

Two DoctorsIn addition to the application form, all candidates must also supply:
  • MBBS marks certificate
  • Certificate of completion of internship
  • Certificate of full registration with the medical council of their/any country, and
  • Two character reference letters from any of their medical school academic staff OR from their current senior medical colleagues and consultants.
These documents must also be scanned and electronically sent to Prof. R. Mathur at rajat.mathur@buckingham.ac.uk, mobile +44 7788 45 44 15. The orignial documents will be needed for final verification once the candidates arrive in the UK to join the MD programme.

There is a separate selection procedure for candidates who will be sponsored for full registration by the GMC.  These candidates must-
  • Have a primary medical qualification awarded by an institution listed on the Avicenna Directory (formally the WHO directory of medical schools).
  • Not have previously applied for registration with the GMC or failed PLAB test.
  • Have worked full-time for at least 2 years in a hospital after the completion of one year rotating internship.
  • Apply for the MD programmes online and supply all the supporting documents (including a full curriculum vitae) listed above for all candidates.
The University of Buckingham Medical School will then invite such candidates for a tele or video conference interview with the professorial staff.  The candidates will be interviewed on their curriculum vitae, clinical knowledge, communication skills and research & ethics.

Candidates who are accepted on our MD programmes and who are successful in the tele/video conference interview will be offered a place on our MD programme with the option of full GMC registration by sponsorship and will be asked to deposit the first installment of tuition fees.

These candidates will then have a 3 month induction period during which they will be closely monitored and continuously assessed.  On the completion of induction, the candidate's progress will be reviewed by the faculty panel.  Once the faculty panel has given a favorable report, the candidates will have a structured formal interview by the professorial faculty.  If the candidate is successful in the structured interview, his/her name will be put forward by the medical school to the GMC for award of full registration by sponsorship.

Criminal records clearance are obtained on successful candidates once they are in the United Kingdom.  The candidates are also required to attend for occupational health check once they are in the UK.
